What can we do to prevent moisture in the basement?

I received a question about what can be done to help prevent and stop water from seeping into the basement.

The first thing you need to do is address it from the exterior.

Your first line of defense is to make sure that your yard properly slopes away from the foundation of the house. The yard needs slope at least 6 inches within the first 10 feet from the house. This will ensure proper drainage away from the house.

Another thing is to make sure that the downspouts for the gutters are extended at least 4 feet away from the foundation of the house. This will prevent water from seeping through the foundation.

For cinder block foundations, make sure that the seams are properly sealed. If there are any gaps, they can be tuck pointed with mortar to make sure that they are properly sealed to help prevent water from seeping through.

So that takes care of it from the exterior side. Now for the interior part, the walls can be sealed with hydraulic cement. I recommend using the brand Drylok. It’s a good brand and it will help seal the block from the inside. It is paintable so you can make it look nice.

This is how you can ensure that your basement is properly sealed and stop any further water from seeping in.
